Eagle Institute Winter Programs Have Something For Everyone

LACKAWAXENSee you next winter for Eagle watching programs, guided habitat excursions and data collection thru The Eagle Institute.

All Institute programs are designed to protect the bald eagle and its habitat and to educate eagle watchers about the “safest and least intrusive” way to view bald eagles. The non-profit organization, which operates out of a winter field office in Lackawaxen, PA, has been providing educational programs and collecting data for more than 10 years. Nearly 50 volunteers are trained in “Eagle Etiquette” to assist the eagle watchers and to collect critical data about the wintering eagles.

The summit village and 18 ski trails overlook the upperDelaware River valley.  A 25,000 square foot lodge, skier services building and country store provide everything a skier or non-skier needs to enjoy winter. Ski Big Bear is open for skiing, snowboarding and snow tubing through mid-March and employs 125+ people during the season. Here is what's new at Ski Big Bear in Lackawaxen: -- A second Magic Carpet Lift has been added and a new double/double chair lift! -- Expansion of its snow-making plant to include new low-energy snowguns, increased water pumping capacity and expanded electrical capacity. -- Expanded rental shop including the purchase of new skiing and snowboarding packages. -- Development of the learning center. -- Expansion of the terrain park by developing more terrain as well as building and purchasing more rails, hits and equipment. -- Other improvements include adding additional parking facilities, improving lighting and other infrastructure improvements. Guests of Roebling Inn receive 15% off lift tickets.

Suggested Winter Itinerary:
Day one: Check-in and relax with a cup of hot chocolate or tea and cookies in front of a fireplace. Stretch your legs with a walk across the Roebling Bridge  or to the Zane Grey access to take in some of the winter scenery and maybe see an eagle or two. Dine at the Inn at Lackawaxen, serving rack of lamb, filet mignon, pasta with portobellos. . . Or at the White Pine, serving the best prime rib you'll ever have. . . 

Day two: Bring your camera and binoculars with you to several eagle-viewing locations. Bald eagles are here all year and we can direct you. Afterward, relax or workout nearby at a luxurious indoor pool and spa (fee). Or shop at Alice's Wonderland for high-quality outdoor gear, footwear and ski clothing (Carhartt, Kokatat, Wolverine, Smart Wool). Dine at Pinehurst for prime rib and salad bar.

Day three: With 100% snow-making, Ski Big Bear is only 5 miles away and offers downhill skiing, snow tubing, and snowboarding. Rentals and lessons are available. Enjoy 15% off lift tickets Saturdays & holidays. Or, go on a horse-drawn sleigh ride offered at Triple W riding stables if there is snow on the ground. Or splurge with a couples massage for two at the world class Lodge at Woodloch (50 mins for $275 including gratuity).
